I was chosen to participate in a summer research program for undergraduates at Penn State University and that is what I am working on currently. I am working with the Velegol Lab Group researching packing fractions in colloidal assemblies. We are using macro scale modeling to predict the packing fraction of different ratios of singlets and doublets as seen in a normal colloidal suspension. To simulate the singlets and doublets, as shown below, we used a single bb to represent a singlet and two bbs uper-glued together to represent a doublet. We started off with the known packing fractions of total singlets and total doublets which are 64% and 57% respectively. It is our goal in doing this research to find out what happens in between these two numbers.

Interests and Interesting!
As stated before I do love to play the violin. I have been playing since elementary school and while I have not been able to play in a while, it is still my favorite past time.I also enjoy community service with a focus on the environment. Over the years, I have participated in everything from a creek clean up to volunteering wih the Red Cross. Community Service is very important to me. Its always very humbling to give back or help in any way you can and it opens your eyes up to understand and appreciate the important things in life.

Reading has not always been an interest of mine, however in recent years I have come to enjoy and appreciate it. Currently I am reading Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
which is not like the typical book I would be interested in but its getting pretty good. I am also reaing Innovate or Die by Jack V. Matson for my summer research at Pennsylvania State University. It is a very inspirational book and my favorite quote so far is "It is far better to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by FAILURE, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory or defeat."

Yes, I am one of the few people in the world that can do weird things with weird joints!

About Me
Hello, I am Tawanna Hines and here is a little background information on me. I was born June 17, 1990 in Atlanta, GA which also happened to be my parents' anniversary and father's day of that year. From a very young age, I enjoyed dancing such as ballet and tap. I was also involved in gymnastics and I really enjoyed doing all three. Later on in life, I began to get more in touch with myself and expolred the realms of my ability. I started to play the violin and throughout my career I was fortunate enough to earn the titile concert mistress and be chosen as a member of The Fulton County Honors Orchestra. I also excelled in the world of academia. My mother always told me she expected nothing less and nothing less is what I gave her. I was deemed the student with the highest average in my junior years and graduated in the top 10 percent of my high school class. Extracurricaular activities were no stranger to my life either. I am an active member of The Naional Society of Black Engineers, The American Chemical Society, and The National Beta Club just to name a few. The rest are located on my resume in a fllowing blog. With much hard work, perseverance, and determination, I was able to achieve all of this but it did not stop there. I was awarded the Cooperative Developmental Energy Program Scholarship for Chemistry/Chemical Engineering which is a full scholarship in a dual-degree prpgram at The Fort Valley State University and one of 5 corresponding schools. And this is where I am now, a 19 year old Chemistry Major with a current 4.0 gpa at The Fort Valley Sate University. In this blog is everything you need to know about me and I hope you enjoy. I will leave you with a quote that I like to live by: "True character is doing good deeds when no one is looking."
